SENIOR PROCESS CONTROL ENGINEER

 

Full-time position: (40 Hours per week)

Benefits: Health insurance

Reporting: This position reports to the VP of Engineering

 

Chromatan (www.chromatan.com) is a growing startup focused on solving a major process bottleneck in therapeutic protein production while significantly lowering the cost of goods for biotech and contract manufacturing companies. Our mission is to enable next-generation flexible manufacturing facilities and lower cost production of life-saving biologics.

 

Our Continuous Countercurrent Tangential Chromatography (CCTC) platform provides an inexpensive column-free, continuous and single-use solution that replaces large scale column chromatography processes used in biologics manufacturing. The platform has been tested with over a dozen major biotech companies and has consistently shown a 5-15X increase in throughput at equivalent or better product quality to systems in use today.  The company has won multiple contracts and awards from the US National Institute of Health (NIH) as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) totaling over $5 Million to develop end-to-end continuous bio-production based on the CCTC platform.  Chromatan will be launching a process development (PD) system in 2020 and is currently engaged in R&D contracts with multiple biopharm companies which are evaluating CCTC with various feed streams and chromatographic modalities.

 

The position of Senior Process Control Engineer will focus on the development and engineering of software and controls for commercial skids as well as the development PAT and control integration strategy for fully continuous integrated bioprocessing operations.

 

Location & Travel:

  • Based in Springhouse, PA, but with working location in Penn State, PA
  • Must be willing to travel up to 50% in the first four months after start of employment to State College, PA
  • Must be willing to travel between work sites, contractor sites, and potential customer sites (up to ~25% travel)

 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Lead development of process control solutions for commercial Chromatan continuous chromatography system and related auxiliary systems
  • Design and implement control system architecture including hardware, software, instrumentation and networking equipment
  • Employ Beckhoff hardware, custom PCBs and TwinCAT development environment to automate chromatography operations
  • Employ OPC-UA protocol to manage HMI-PLCs tag database
  • Employ EtherCAT communication protocol to implement IOT (Industry4.0) solutions
  • Develop HMI and sequences for automated process control of Chromatan chromatography systems using Lucullus PIMS (Securecell)
  • Work with outside contractors to develop custom PCBs and firmware
  • Act as SME on electrical design and wiring schematics for process controls hardware
  • Perform electrical wiring work to assemble prototypes
  • Test and demonstrate working prototypes

 

Technical skills and experience

  • 5-10 years of industrial experience in development of process control solutions for commercial products

●     Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering

●     Demonstrate experience with deploying process control solutions for commercial products

●     Proficient experience in implementing control methodology in PLC and HMI platforms with a high level of understanding of various programming languages. Able to easily adapt to a new platform with development support

●     Proficiency with Beckhoff hardware, EtherCAT protocol and TwinCAT 3.0 is desired. 

  • PCB design and layout experience preferred
  • Experience with coding and controls in a highly regulated environment preferred
  • Experience with bioprocessing preferred

ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST I

This position will support the downstream purification team for development and implementation of a fully integrated end to end continuous bio-production platform fully enabled with PAT. This position will focus on evaluating continuous operation technologies using quality by design techniques, to develop and optimize novel, continuous recovery and purification processes, for recombinant proteins and biological macromolecules. The applicant should have experience in laboratory research, and a desire to continue in a laboratory-focused role. The position will interface with a small team of scientist and engineers focused on continuous chromatography process development and technology transfer to demonstration scale production.

     Investigate and develop novel bioproduction technologies

     Scale-up process evaluation

     Support early research activities, government grant projects, and client projects

     Support the development of in-process analytics of monoclonal antibodies

     Conduct experiments, perform tests and provide analyses as part of a variety of research and development activities, e.g., small-scale studies, pilot plant and analytical

     Evaluate and summarize study results

 

Technical skills and experience

     Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field

     0-2 years of industrial experience in development of process control solutions for commercial products

     Knowledge and technical experience in biotechnology related development, including chromatography, fluid mechanics, filter sizing, analytical techniques, and process design, preferred

     Hands on experience with basic chromatography, and filtration.

     Working knowledge of basic analytical techniques such as HPLC, UV-Vis, and ELISA.

     Wet lab experience in an academic or industry setting
